This variety is characterized by larger fruit size compared to the Ninpo kumquat, commonly known as the typical kumquat. Originating from Eastern China, specifically from Jiangsu to Fujian Province, this tree reaches a height of 1-2 meters. Its fruit, among the largest in kumquats, weighs around 30-40 grams. It’s also known as Fushou, Fuzhou, or Changshou kumquat. The tree is robust and easy to grow, maintaining its shape even without pruning, making it suitable as a symbol tree. It bears fruit abundantly even as a young plant, ideal for pot cultivation. It’s self-fertile and suitable for hedges.
Unlike the typical kumquat, where the entire fruit, including the peel, is often eaten, the peel of this kumquat can be coarse. Thus, it’s better when sweetened and prepared as candied, honeyed, or in a syrup. It can also be made into dried fruit after being sweetened and soaked in sugar.
