This grain is said to be native to India and Southeast Asia. It has been popular in Japan since ancient times, and its name appears in Japan’s oldest collection of waka poems, Manyoshu, which was established in the late Nara period (710-794). The most familiar plant-related item for Japanese people living today is the millet dumpling that appears in one of the most famous Japanese folk tales, “Momotaro. The story is about Momotaro, a boy born from a peach who grows up to become a big boy and goes to exterminate ogres. When he goes to exterminate the ogres, he brings with him millet dumplings, which are rice cakes made from this plant.
