Shikimi,Illicium anisatum

Shikimi (also known as Illicium anisatum or Japanese star anise) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Illiciaceae family. It’s native to warm regions in Japan, China, and Korea. The fruit of the shikimi plant resembles star anise and has been traditionally used as a fragrance due to its pleasant aroma. However, the fruit and seeds of shikimi contain a toxic compound called “shikimic acid,” and consumption can lead to poisoning.

In Japan, there are regions where the branches and leaves of shikimi are offered on altars during the Obon festival. On the other hand, the star anise used for culinary purposes is derived from the fruit of a different plant, Illicium verum. It’s essential to differentiate between the two to avoid confusion.

Note: Shikimi is toxic, so it should never be ingested.
